As a proud community partner of Glass Jar Australia, we paid a heart-warming visit to the Shooting Stars participants at Narrogin Senior High School (SHS). Shooting Stars is an educational program that uses netball, and other tools, to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls living in remote WA communities to attend school more regularly and remain in school for longer.
Health Services Manager, Laura Brennan, Learning & Development Advisor, Emily Pettitt and Senior Communications Advisor, Meagan Pillinger, were able to share their education pathway and work-life journey with the year seven Shooting Stars participants, giving the girls tips to help them get to school on time and how to study more effectively.
Latoya Bolton Black, Shooting Stars Regional Manager, explained how grateful she was for the support of Mineral Resources as she, having attended Narrogin SHS herself, has witnessed the life-changing impact of the Shooting Stars room. As Latoya explained, “Having a safe space on campus for the girls to access at any time and talk to someone that they trust is a game-changer in terms of mental health, learning outcomes and, consequently, attendance rates”.
Latoya, having started out as a Shooting Stars Program Coordinator, is looking forward to continuing her leadership journey by undertaking management training at Australian Institute of Management (AIM) later this year. The opportunity for the training was made possible by our Managing Director, Chris Ellison, who donated the $20,000 AIM management training prize he received when he won the Pinnacle Award for the 2019 WA Business Leader of the Year, to Glass Jar Australia.
